Being able to identify trees is an important skill for anyone who wants to understand how a woodland works and how it can be managed sustainably. Our practical tree identification course at Three Copse Woodland Products in Hampshire helps you recognise tree species in both summer and winter, understand their characteristics and explore how they are used and managed within a woodland.
Our Tree Identification and Uses course is designed for those working in woodland management, small woodland owners, countryside enthusiasts and anyone wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the trees they encounter on woodland walks.
Through a mixture of guided discussion and practical identification in the woodland, you will learn how to recognise a range of common native tree species using features such as bark, buds, leaves, growth habit and habitat.
Alongside identification, we will also explore the traditional and modern uses of different timbers, how various species respond to management techniques such as coppicing, and the important role trees play within the wider woodland ecosystem.

Our woodland courses are suitable for beginners, and no previous experience is needed unless stated otherwise. We provide the tools and materials required, and tea and coffee are available throughout the day.
Please wear sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing appropriate for the weather. As our woodland is hilly and steep in places, let us know when booking if you have any mobility concerns so we can discuss suitable arrangements.
Courses take place outdoors, so severe weather may occasionally mean postponing a session. We will contact participants if alternative arrangements are needed.

All of our woodland courses take place in our own 64 acres of ancient woodland in the heart of the South Downs, near Clanfield, Hampshire. Much of the woodland is at different stages of restoration, providing a practical setting to learn about trees, woodland ecology and sustainable management.
Our woodland is certified by Grown in Britain, reflecting our commitment to the responsible management of our woodland and the sustainable use of British timber.
Around 7 hours which will allow us to explore our ancient woodland and the trees that it holds including some less common species
Tea and coffee are provided throughout the course. Other food is not included, although we can arrange a barbecue if requested in advance.
