Hedge laying Taster Days

Our Hedge Laying Taster Days are some of our most popular winter courses, offering a practical introduction to this traditional countryside craft in just a single day.

This highly hands-on course gives you the opportunity to work directly on a hedge while learning to safely use a range of traditional tools and techniques.

During the course we will cover:

  • Risk assessment and safe working practices

  • Basic tool maintenance and sharpening

  • Selecting and using stakes and binders

  • The principles and purpose of hedge laying

  • Practical hedge laying techniques in the field

Designed for beginners and countryside enthusiasts alike, this course aims to provide a solid introduction to the tools, methods and safety considerations involved in traditional hedge laying while giving you plenty of time to gain practical experience.

Tools and techniques

While we are more than happy for couse participants to bring there own tools on the course we are also able to provide tools for the day.

The general tools we will be using include:

  1. Billhook
  2. axe
  3. pruning saw

 

These are the basis of many aspects of woodland work so you will have a head start on other courses.

Important Information

You will also have a chance to look at our own Grown in Britain certified woodland here in the heart of Hampshire and how we manage it, the importance of that management to the woodland and the charcoal process.

The course will be run in our own woodland based in the heart to the Hampshire Southdowns, nr Clanfield.

Food and refreshments

There will be an ample supply of tea/coffee on tap but no other food is provided, we can of course set up the bbq if requested.

Unless otherwise stated all of our courses will be carried out in our own woodland here in Clanfield Hampshire.

Over last 20 years we have been working to restore and improve both the condition and habit with on our own woodland, as part of that we have been monitoring the plants with in the woodland.

Accommodation

There are a good number of local hotels and b and b’s in the area for which we can give you detail on application.
